Envisioning
From Present Reality to Future Calling
Envisioning helps a church move from assessment and repair toward renewed clarity about its Great Commission calling in this particular place. A team of leaders and members prays, studies the congregation and community, and asks whom the church is especially called to love and serve. The process gives the church a shared direction that can shape ministry priorities, leadership decisions, and the search for its next pastor.
Grounded in the Church and Its Community
The work begins with what the church has already learned about itself through the Church Health Assessment, including its strengths, pain points, gifts, and current capacity. The Session and Envisioning Team also define a meaningful local area to study, such as a neighborhood, school zone, or nearby community. This grounds the process in both the church’s present reality and the actual people and needs around it.
Learning from Neighbors, Leaders, and the Congregation
The Envisioning Team learns by getting close to the community. Team members review local demographics, interview civic and ministry leaders, take part in a prayer walk, and listen for where God may already be at work. The congregation contributes through prayer and a Gifts and Values Survey, helping the team understand the church’s heart, abilities, and sense of calling. Together, these activities reveal particular neighbors, needs, opportunities, and areas where the church may be equipped to respond.
A Shared Direction for Ministry and Pastoral Search
The research is gathered into a notebook and brought into a prayerful retreat. There, the Envisioning Team looks for patterns, weighs what it has learned, and works toward a clear expression of the church’s missionary identity and local focus. The Session receives and refines the direction before it is shared with the congregation. The result then informs future ministry priorities, the Pastor Profile, and the Lead Pastor Packet, helping the church call a pastor suited to where it believes God is leading.
