Each week, the Flourish team would like to recommend resources that will help you on your journey of Church Renewal. While we don’t endorse every single idea from every single resource we are attempting to cultivate a useful resource list for you.
Resource: A Praying Life, by Paul Miller
Background: Paul Miller (yes, the son of Jack Miller!) leads seeJesus and is a prolific author and international speaker. Paul grew up in a minister’s family and experienced the gospel revolution his father went through helping him solidify it in writing and in helping found what is now called Serge. As God’s grinding wheel of marriage, parenting a disabled child, and (though we’ve never spoken so this is a guess…) critique shaped Paul’s younger Christian life, he learned to love like His Savior and to pray.
Take-aways: My (Matt’s) friends know me as “the book guy”. Rarely does one leave a conversation with me without having heard a reference to a book or a suggestion to read a book. Paul’s books are ones I regularly recommend to ministry leaders because they are searching and thus have the possibility of being transformative (if one leans into it). A Praying Life is a once-in-a-generation kind of book. And I don’t say that lightly. And neither do the readers of the book nor the participants in A Praying Life seminar. In our podcast on the topic of a A New Prayerfulness I talk about the fact that few ministry leaders utilize or enjoy what I have come to call long-form prayer. If this is a struggle for you, reading (maybe in a small group of pastors or with other ministry leaders in your church) Miller’s book could go a long way in remedying what is perhaps an under-formed part of your own discipleship.
